about outdoor
therapy with me

I am a qualified psychodynamic
counsellor / therapist
working in the outdoors.

I am a walk and talk therapist.

Have you thought of a different way of doing therapy?

The therapy isn't just about talking.

It's about taking a walk, experiencing the nature around you while accessing your thoughts and emotions in a therapy setting.

We take the therapeutic conversations into the outdoors with walk and talk therapy. It's partly about being free from the constraints of traditional therapy, where you process your thoughts to the rhythm of your own footsteps.

The therapy takes place in an agreed outdoor space

It could take place through:

  • walking and talking

  • sitting on a bench / log / camping chair

  • a mix of walking & talking and sitting

The route could be:

  • agreed on, or

  • determined as we go along

In outdoor therapy, we agree on the place and the setting together, to suit you. It is important that you feel safe in your choices.

We will agree between us on what we do if the following events take place

  • if either of us meets someone we know

  • if we meet a dog who wants attention (and owner is apologising)

  • if there is a significant change in the weather during the session

The weather

  • I will check the day before on the conditions and allow for a discussion on changing the agreed route / meeting place if there is a severe weather forecast / heavy rain etc.

Safety

  • I have a GPS tracker with an SOS facility which is supported by a contact team.

working outdoors

Working therapeutically outside provides the protection that nature can offer us.

There is research to suggest that anxiety is reduced when spending 20 to 30 minutes in nature.

So why not try outdoor therapy.

Breathe in the goodness from the trees and the leaves. Breathe in the pace of our stride and breathe out those thoughts that worry you.

Passing Through

We will pass lightly on our surrounds

guided by the steps of others

that this path was bourne of,

lined, but with stem, leaf and twig,

branches are laid bare

cast off for ground's own fodder

for mine is the tree, is the path

the green, the blue and black skies

by these stirrings of ancient treads,

paths and thoughts that have lived.

We will enter into this open, rooved by the

stretched out sky, our overhead horizon,

we will pass lightly on our surrounds

to speak, to listen, side by side

the fighting heart, unleashed, free

to move through the lines of a life,

shaped by these others

we will pass lightly on our surrounds,

to leave, for [the wish] a free day, my,

what a day that would be.
